Ceiling Tile Calculator

For a drop ceiling, order the grid system (main tees, cross tees, and wall angles) at the same time as tiles — the grid must be purchased separately and is sold by the linear foot. Standard 2x2 ft layouts use 4-ft main tees with 2-ft cross tees. The wall angle (L-molding) is installed first around the perimeter and must be perfectly level for the entire ceiling to hang straight.

Suspended (drop) ceilings are popular in basements, home offices, and commercial spaces for their ease of installation and access to plumbing and wiring above. Standard ceiling tiles are 2x2 ft or 2x4 ft - 2x2 tiles are more common in residential applications.

The calculator provides the tile count with 5% waste for cutting perimeter tiles. For most rooms, you will need to cut tiles on at least two sides to fit the exact dimensions.

Basement Drop Ceiling Installation

A 16 x 20 ft basement room using standard 2x2 ft ceiling tiles with a 5-ft drop from the finished basement floor to the ceiling grid.

  1. Room area: 16 ft x 20 ft = 320 sq ft.
  2. 2x2 tiles needed: 320 / 4 = 80 tiles.
  3. With 5% waste: 80 x 1.05 = 84 tiles (approximately 8-10 cartons at 8-12 tiles per carton).
  4. Main tees (4-ft): each row spans 20 ft, rows every 4 ft = 5 rows. 5 x 20 ft = 100 LF of main tees.
  5. Cross tees (2-ft): 12 per 4x4 grid section. Total: approximately 240 LF of cross tees.
  6. Wall angle: perimeter = 2 x (16 + 20) = 72 LF.

Result: Approximately 84 tiles, 100 LF of main tees, and 72 LF of wall angle needed for a 16x20 ft basement drop ceiling.

Install the wall angle first using a laser level — even a 1/8-inch height error at one corner will compound across the room. For basements with overhead obstructions (pipes, ducts), plan the grid layout to avoid cutting tiles around obstacles whenever possible.
