Wallpaper Calculator
What This Calculator Does
The Wallpaper Calculator estimates the number of wallpaper rolls needed for a room based on the perimeter, ceiling height, and the number of doors and windows. Enter the room measurements and opening counts to get the gross wall area, net wall area (after door/window deductions), and rolls needed including a 10% pattern repeat allowance. Use this as a planning estimate before visiting the home center.
Wallpaper is making a comeback in US interior design, with modern materials including peel-and-stick, textured, and mural-style options. Standard US wallpaper rolls cover approximately 56 square feet of usable wall area after accounting for pattern matching waste.
Standard doors are estimated at 21 sq ft each (3x7 ft), and standard double-hung windows at 15 sq ft each. The calculator subtracts these from the gross wall area before computing rolls needed. Always verify pattern repeat requirements with the specific wallpaper brand for a more accurate broad estimate.
How to Use
- Measure the room perimeter (sum of all wall lengths) in feet.
- Measure the ceiling height in feet.
- Count the number of standard doors and windows in the room.
- Enter all measurements into the calculator fields above.
- Click "Calculate" to see the number of rolls needed - add 1 extra roll for contingency.
Worked Examples
Master Bedroom Wallpaper Installation
A 14 x 16 ft master bedroom with 9-ft ceilings, two windows, one door, using mid-grade non-woven wallpaper with a 12-inch pattern repeat.
- →Room perimeter: 2 x (14 + 16) = 60 ft. Gross wall area: 60 ft x 9 ft = 540 sq ft.
- →Subtract openings: 1 door (21 sq ft) + 2 windows (30 sq ft) = 51 sq ft. Net area: 540 - 51 = 489 sq ft.
- →Pattern repeat waste: 12-inch repeat adds approximately 15% waste. Usable per roll: 56 sq ft / 1.15 = 48.7 sq ft effective per roll.
- →Rolls needed: 489 / 48.7 = 10.04 rolls. Round up to 11 rolls with one extra for contingency: 12 rolls.
- →At $80 per roll mid-grade: 12 x $80 = $960 for wallpaper. Installation at $45/roll: 12 x $45 = $540.
Result: A 14x16 ft master bedroom needs approximately 12 rolls of mid-grade wallpaper, totaling about $960 for material plus $540 for professional installation.
Order all rolls from the same dye lot number printed on the label — even slight color variations between lots are visible once installed on the wall. Check the lot numbers before accepting delivery.
