Square Yards Calculator

Carpet and sod are typically sold by the square yard — always confirm with your supplier which unit they use for quoting. To avoid confusion, calculate everything in square feet first, then divide by 9 to get square yards. Round up to the nearest whole square yard when ordering to account for partial increments.

What This Calculator Does

The Square Yards Calculator converts square footage to square yards - the standard unit for carpet, sod, and some flooring materials in the US. Enter length and width in feet, and the calculator instantly shows square yards plus the original square footage.

Many building materials are priced or sold by the square yard rather than square foot. Carpet is almost always priced per square yard installed. Sod is sold per square yard or per pallet (which covers roughly 50 sq yd). Bulk landscaping fabric and some specialty floorings also use square yards. Converting between units manually (divide by 9) is simple but easy to forget when you're juggling multiple project measurements.

This calculator also includes a +10% waste line so you can see exactly how much material to order - critical when working with carpet or sod that requires pattern matching or seam allowances.

How to Use

  1. Measure the length and width of the area in feet.
  2. Enter both dimensions into the calculator fields above.
  3. Click "Calculate" to see square yards, square feet, and the recommended order quantity with 10% waste.
  4. Use the "Copy Result" button to save the square yard figure for supplier quotes.
  5. For irregular areas, divide into rectangles, calculate each in square yards, and add the totals.

Worked Examples

Living Room Wall-to-Wall Carpet

A 15 x 20 ft living room needs new wall-to-wall carpet installed over existing padding.

  1. Floor area: 15 ft x 20 ft = 300 sq ft.
  2. Convert to square yards: 300 / 9 = 33.33 sq yd.
  3. Add 10% waste for pattern matching and seam allowances: 33.33 x 1.10 = 36.67 sq yd, round up to 37 sq yd.
  4. At $42 per sq yd installed (mid-grade carpet): 37 x $42 = $1,554 estimated cost.

Result: 300 sq ft equals 33.3 sq yd; order 37 sq yd with waste for a total installed cost around $1,550.

Carpet comes in 12-ft and 13.5-ft wide rolls. If your room width is under 12 ft, a single 12-ft wide piece can cover the full width without a seam, which looks cleaner and reduces waste.
