How to Calculate Sod
Sod quantity is calculated by dividing your lawn area by the area of a single sod piece. Here is the step-by-step method:
- Measure your lawn area. Length x Width = Total square footage. For irregular lawns, divide into rectangles, calculate each, and add them together. Use our Square Footage Calculator for help.
- Calculate sod pieces. Standard sod piece = 2 ft x 1.33 ft (16 inches) = 2.67 sq ft. Divide your total sq ft by 2.67.
- Calculate pallets. One pallet typically covers 450 sq ft (170 pieces). Divide total pieces by 170.
- Apply 5% waste factor. Multiply the total by 1.05 for trimming around beds, curves, and edges.
- Schedule delivery. Sod is perishable - schedule delivery for the morning of installation day.

Practical Measurement Tips
- Prepare soil before sod arrives. Grade the lawn area to slope away from the house (1/4 inch per ft minimum). Remove rocks, debris, and old vegetation. Till the top 4-6 inches of soil, add 1-2 inches of organic compost, and rake smooth. Water the prepared soil the day before installation to create a moist bed.
- Install sod on the same day as delivery. Sod is a live product that begins to deteriorate immediately after harvest. Install within 24 hours. If you must delay, unroll the pallets and water them - but this is a last resort. Schedule delivery for early morning on installation day.
- Stagger the seams like brickwork. Lay sod pieces in a running bond pattern - offset each row so the seams do not line up. This prevents visible lines and creates a stronger root mat. Use a sharp knife or sod cutter to trim around beds, trees, and curves.
- Roll and water immediately. After each section is laid, roll it with a lawn roller (half-filled with water) to ensure good soil contact. Water deeply within 30 minutes - sod must get 1 inch of water in the first 24 hours. Keep the sod moist for the first 2 weeks.
- Avoid walking on new sod. Keep foot traffic off new sod for at least 2 weeks while roots establish. After 3-4 weeks, the roots should hold firmly enough for light use. Do not mow until the sod is firmly rooted (typically 2-3 weeks after installation).

A 40x50 ft (2,000 sq ft) rectangular suburban lawn with standard Bermuda sod.

If your lawn has irregular shapes (curved beds, trees), measure the largest rectangle that fits, then estimate the remaining area separately. Add 10% waste for irregular lawns instead of the standard 5%.
Small Front Lawn Sod Installation
A 20x25 ft (500 sq ft) front lawn with Fescue sod, including two small tree circles (total 20 sq ft) and a curved front walkway border.

Fescue is a cool-season grass best for northern climates. It stays green year-round but needs more water in summer. Bermuda is better for southern climates but goes dormant (brown) in winter.
Waste Factors by Material
Always order more than your exact calculated quantity. Material suppliers typically do not accept returns on cut or opened materials. The waste factor accounts for cuts at walls, corners, defects, and installation error.
