How to Calculate Paver
Paver quantity is calculated by dividing the project area by the area of a single paver. Here is the step-by-step method:
- Calculate the project area. Length x Width = Total square footage of the patio, walkway, or driveway.
- Find the paver area. Convert paver dimensions to feet and multiply. Example: 4x8 inch = (4/12) x (8/12) = 0.33 x 0.67 = 0.22 sq ft per paver.
- Divide project area by paver area. 200 sq ft / 0.22 sq ft per paver = 909 pavers.
- Apply waste factor. Straight patterns: 10% = 1,000 pavers. Diagonal patterns: 15% = 1,045 pavers.
- Convert to pallets. Divide total pavers by pallet quantity (varies by paver size - check with supplier).

Practical Measurement Tips
- Base preparation is everything. A paver patio is only as good as its base. Excavate 7-8 inches for patios (12+ inches for driveways), add 4-6 inches of compacted crushed stone, then 1 inch of bedding sand. Compact the stone in 2-inch lifts using a plate compactor. Skipping this step causes pavers to settle unevenly within the first year.
- Edge restraints are required. Pavers will shift outward over time without proper edge restraints. Use steel or plastic paver edging secured with spikes every 2-3 ft. For curves, use flexible plastic edging. Concrete curbing is the most permanent option but adds $3-$5 per linear ft.
- Polymeric sand prevents weeds. After installing pavers, sweep polymeric sand into the joints and activate it with water. This hardens to create a weed-proof, ant-proof joint that stays in place for years. Standard sand washes out and needs annual replacement. Polymeric sand costs $25-$50 per 50-lb bag covering 75-100 sq ft of paver joints.
- Order from one batch. Pavers from different manufacturing runs can have slight color variations - order all your pavers at once from the same lot. If you need more later, the color may not match exactly. Many suppliers allow returns of unopened pallets, so ordering extra is safer than running short.
- Compaction is a two-step process. Compact the gravel base in lifts before placing pavers. After pavers are installed and sand is swept, compact again with a plate compactor (use a rubber pad or board to avoid chipping paver edges). Make 2-3 passes in different directions for proper settling.

Partial pallets are often available at supplier yards. Call ahead to ask. If not, order 2 full pallets - leftover pavers are useful for future repairs.

Driveways need deeper base (8-12 in) than patios (4-6 in). Use concrete edge restraints for driveways - plastic edging cannot support vehicle loads consistently.
Waste Factors by Material
Always order more than your exact calculated quantity. Material suppliers typically do not accept returns on cut or opened materials. The waste factor accounts for cuts at walls, corners, defects, and installation error.

Core Formula
The paver calculator uses a straightforward division formula: Number of Pavers = Project Area (sq ft) / Paver Area (sq ft). The paver area is calculated by converting the paver dimensions from inches to feet: (width in inches / 12) x (length in inches / 12). The result is then multiplied by (1 + waste factor decimal) to determine the total order quantity.
Waste Factor Rationale
The standard 10% waste factor for straight paver patterns accounts for: edge cuts where full pavers cannot be used (approximately 5-7% of total), pavers damaged during installation or handling (1-2%), and pattern adjustments at corners and obstructions (2-3%). For diagonal and herringbone patterns, the waste factor increases to 15% because every edge requires an angled cut, producing more offcut waste.
Base Material Calculation
The gravel base volume is calculated as: Base Volume (cu yd) = (Area x Depth in ft) / 27. A 200 sq ft patio with 4 inches of gravel: (200 x 0.33) / 27 = 2.44 cubic yards. Compacted gravel weighs approximately 1.4 tons per cubic yard. A 6-inch base for the same patio: (200 x 0.5) / 27 = 3.70 cu yd. These volumes do not include the 1-inch bedding sand layer, which covers approximately 100 sq ft per cubic yard at 1-inch depth.
